My love for the water began in the Pacific Northwest. I had freedom growing up that is unthinkable today. I left home when the sun came up and only returned when it became too dark outside to play. My adventures on the water began on the sloughs built for flood control connecting the Cowlitz River to the Columbia River. My friends and I would build rafts and use anything that would float to be on the water. I learned to row a boat and paddle a canoe at my parents’ boat rental on Lake Sacagawea in my home town of Longview, Washington. My love of sailing began at Boy Scout camp during my summers on Spirit Lake. But this story is not just about me building a twenty-six-foot sailboat and sailing the Pacific Coast alone. The real stories are the secrets I discovered along the way. I found peace that had escaped me for many years and a happiness that is not dependent on what you do or what you have.
