Cowes, Isle of Wight: With a brisk west-southwesterly holding steady for the first part of the day, Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard was able to complete the 50 nautical miles course at record speed, breaking his own time set in 2001 racing Skandia Leopard, by over 12 minutes. He then went on to take a new time for the complete circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, which is subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council.

First out of the blocks
The Open 60s are the first to go at 6am on Saturday, with three skippers ready to line up for the Vendee Globe, round-the-world solo, non-stop race later this year. As well as Alex Thomson on Hugo Boss teaming up with Ben Ainslie and F1 star Lewis Hamilton, record-breaker Dee Caffari will race aboard Aviva and Mike Golding on Ecover.

With 94 days to go to this year’s JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, entries at 507 show an increase on the same point in 2007 and there are still savings to be made for those entering before 29th March 2008.
One of the yachts making a racing debut is Infinity of Cowes, a brand new CNB95 (See www.cnb.fr/cr-infinity_uk.php )from the custom wing of Beneteau. The boat is currently undergoing sea trials in France ready for delivery to her British owner. With a 95 foot length overall and 23 foot beam Infinity of Cowes is cutter rigged and will be racing in the IRC division.
